The practice by these companies folks is known as Double Dipping.
Third is, there WILL be occasional skipping and freezing. The loading issue is one of three issues that I've had with it. I received mine through Sony. When I went to Best Buy to purchase this product last year and asked them if it played TrueHD they didn't even know what I was talking about, and then came back after their little huddle and said yes. That is why we have mistakenly purchased this player that's not capable of doing what other newer devices can do. The same thing is done in the dvd industry. (Which was just a guess) Oh, how I miss the days of The Good Guys store (superior technological advisors).
This also helps to keep your player running better and lasting longer by not getting clogged with dust, dirt, and yes.people's left over chicken grease. The only way to stop it is to stop consuming their products. This may be helpful to some, but on a side note: I've learned through years of technology purchases to never buy a new technology because it won't do what you will want it to do until a new device comes out later. The second is that it doesn't have HD audio (DTS-HD,Dolby-HD, TrueHD).
I've managed to limit the number of occurrences that this happens by making sure I clean all rental dvd's before placing them inside my player. Technology is being pushed out to the public before it is ready to be sold. Anywho. And do yourselves all a favor by doing your own research before making a buy.
I've had this device for some time now. There is a firmware update for those of you who can no longer load your players. the smart companies out there will throw out a bad to fair product, knowing it will be consumed by us anyway because it's "new technology", then make a better product and sell it to the same consumers for more money.
Although it was unconscionably slow in loading - or even opening the DVD tray - the viewing was crisp, clear and very exciting to watch.Then I purchased something else - and it wouldn't play. But as I live in a Mac-environment, the burning of the CD with the appropriate software was not easily accomplished.
I have no idea whether they have improved their most recent releases, but I would be very wary of Sony Blue ray players. And a third time.
So I had to order the firmware (for free) which Sony delivered two weeks after ordering.Then it happened again. Or even asked if I ALWAYS wanted new firmware updates even without being asked.This is nonsense.
I bought this several years ago when the HD/Blue Ray wars ended.I purchased several Blue Ray discs and was content with the initial viewing. I had to update the firmware.
Every time I try to watch a new release (The Dark Knight, Quantum of Solace) I find myself in this loop of (1) needing new software, (2) ordering it and (3) waiting 2-3 weeks to watch the DVD that I purchased.It's too bad that Sony has never heard of wireless connectivity that might allow for the player to be updated automatically.
Thanks Sony.audiomeister Brand name recognition is not what it used to be. Technology of this player will be supersede in all areas by many newer products for half the money. I spent $700.00 for two when they were introduced. Starting time, loading times are unacceptable.
I lot of hard earned money down the drain. Save your money for another player. Quality of the hd/bd is glossy without detail @1080P24fps. Purchased 2, one for the bedroom and one for the family room. SD-DVD is poorly processed.
This Sony BDP-S300 is not worthy of a full review.
Some people have reported 10-15 minute load times. Apparently, the incompatibility and slow load problem is ameliorated somewhat with firmware upgrades, but in their infinite wisdom, Sony distributes firmware not as an ISO image, but as a.EXE that somehow expands into an ISO, which means Mac users have to scrounge around for the ISO on fora.Disney movies often don't play at all.
The saving grace of the BDP S301 (which is identical to the S300) is that I got it from a friend who was so furious with it, he bought another one and threw this one away in my direction, so it didn't cost me anything but time. Supposedly, firmware 4.5 solves this issue, but I wouldn't know.
Wall-E in particular causes problems. I couldn't even find the current firmware version without digging through to find a hidden menu (System Menu > Video Setup > TV Type > 16:9 > Blue button) when obviously the firmware version is critically important on this (and perhaps other) Blu-Ray players.Overall, I'm unimpressed.
This player is very slow to load movies. I wouldn't know, as I haven't gotten it to load a movie at all yet.
I can't find the ISO of the firmware to burn.
Both representatives told me the essentially the same useless information I got off the web site. I gave up with Sony and decided I had nothing to lose by taking the unit apart my self. I contacted customer service via the internet and then by phone. You would think the inverter of Blu-ray would make a better piece of Equipment.
(They also told me there is no mechanical way to eject a stuck DVD). The unit has the 4.5 current firmware update. It took about an hour, to take the unit apart, remove the DVD and reassemble it. The DVD would not load, and would not eject from the player. I've had all the freeze up problems, problems with rented DVD's mentioned in these reviews. The unit is 1 month out of warranty. I followed the instructions for ejecting a stuck DVD, it wouldn't eject. They also told me Sony would extract the DVD for $142.00 plus shipping.
It does still work, but I'm going to purchase a new Blu-ray unit today from anybody but Sony. I bought the BDP-S300 in March of 2008. I recently attempted to play a rented Blu-ray DVD. After all the unit is 1 month out of warranty.
